Alex Speckmann-McCulloch is a Sydney-based composer, orchestrator and sound designer specialising in film, theatre, and multimedia. His musical style encompasses both traditional and modern elements, often combining electronic, orchestral and other acoustic instrumental timbres to create a new, yet easily accessible sound.
He has composed original scores for many short films, winning the “Best Composer Award” at the Sydney Film School Festival in December 2011 for his work on “A Music Story“. He has also scored and done the sound design for a number of plays presented by the Australian Academy of Dramatic Art in Sydney, including “Ravenhill Rave” (2010) and “The Pool” (2010).
Born in 1986, Alex began learning piano and clarinet at a young age, receiving a music scholarship (clarinet) to study at St Andrew’s Cathedral School where he gained experience playing in the school orchestra.
He went on to study composition, orchestration and arranging with Julian Gough, Anton Koch and Phillip Johnston at the Australian Institute of Music and is due to complete his Bachelor of Music early 2012. He also has a keen interest in electronic music, having learned production from Sydney-based artists “Biz” and Sebastian Bayne.
